How does one ensure that technological changes in public transport also work for the people who use them? This question is at the core of Sporveien’s major modernisation project: the implementation of the new CBTC signalling system.
The system, which is gradually being introduced on the Oslo Metro, represents a technological shift with significant implications for both train drivers and operational personnel. To ensure that the transition is safe and understandable, it is essential to include Human Factors expertise – and this is where Unstad provides insight and support.
Unstad’s Role in the Project
Unstad supports Sporveien in ensuring that new digital interfaces and operational routines take into account human needs and workflows. Our focus is on how systems are perceived and understood in practice – visually, cognitively, and operationally.
The assignment includes assessments related to the driver environment, coordination between operational roles, and support in developing procedures aligned with the new technological reality.
Our consultant in the project is Jakob Giske Skjong, who works closely with Sporveien’s teams in safety, RAMS, and operations.
A Contribution to Safe and Efficient Operations
Human Factors is not just about screens and buttons – it’s about understanding how people perceive information, make decisions, and interact under pressure. In a signalling system, this is essential for safety, efficiency, and trust in the technology.
Through our involvement, the goal is to help ensure that new solutions work in practice, and that human considerations are integrated into both development and day-to-day operations.
An Example of Unstad’s Cross-Disciplinary Approach
The assignment with Sporveien illustrates how Unstad combines design expertise, user understanding, and technical competence to support large-scale, socially critical projects.
We are proud to take part in shaping the future metro system in Oslo – and we look forward to supporting Sporveien throughout the implementation phase.
